Germany has a wonderful experience known as the Romantic strasse, or “Romantic Road.” It is 350 km (220 miles) of towns between Wurzburg and Fussen. It is old and very beautiful, and history comes alive in these places! The featured picture in this post shows one of the most photographed towers in Germany. The picture was taken with my iPhone!
Our plan was to stay in the old city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber inside the walls near the Marketplatz. Booking.com was very helpful. The staff at Hotel Sonne was absolutely wonderful.
Note: always ask if parking needs to be reserved in these little towns. Hotel Sonne has a nice private garage, but it definitely requires a reservation.
We had lunch in the Marketplatz after parking the car; we had about 2.5 hours until checkin. Bratwurst and cabbage was fantastic (and of course, a Weisbeer for me and a Helles for Paul).
We walked around the Marketplatz shopping, and then went up into the walls of the city.
Then we made our way to the castle; remember, there is Always a Schloss! The Burggarten is a fabulous garden and tribute to the medieval times. The chapel is beautiful, and the flowers are gorgeous. It is a peaceful escape from the Marketplatz.
We went back through the city to visit the cathedral. The highlight for me was the sculpture of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Next, we stopped at a restaurant called The Reichkuchenmeister. The house was built in the 12th century! It sits in the shadow of the cathedral, and it has a lovely patio open for lunch, happy hour, and dinner service starts at 6:00 pm.
Dinner took us to a little restaurant with another Gorgeous Courtyard and Garden. This is where I had the most fun! The staff was friendly, and the waitress brought me the salad dressing recipe, well…. almost. We can’t give away all of the kitchen’s secrets.
