Jennskitchenblog Adventures in Germany, Austria, & Italy – Day 7 Passionspiele Oberammergau 🇩🇪

When we started planning this trip, the Passion Play in Oberammergau was not actually going to be performed in 2022. However, THANKS to the crazy Covid insanity, it was postponed to 2022. Bucket list…. Had to go!!! We bought the tickets through a resale site viagogo.com. Here is the link to the website.

Oberammergau is a town that was devastated by the plague in the 1600s. The town made a commitment to do the Passion Play as a thanks to God for bringing them through the disaster, and they have continued for over 350 years. There is a cross on the top of the mountain overlooking the city that reminds them of their commitment.

The Passion Play is the story of the last 5 days of Jesus’ life from Palm Sunday to the crucifixion and resurrection. It is amazing, and there are absolutely no words that can be written here to show how moving it really was. Paul said, “You know it all in German, right?” I said, “Of course, but I know the story!”

Each scene begins with a Tableau of the Old Testament that parallels the story of the New Testament, from the Garden of Eden to the Sacrifice of Isaac. Here are a few of my favorite scenes.

The play is 8 hours long. It starts at 2:30 (or 1:30 later in the year.) Make reservations for dinner in the town. Then there is a 2 hour intermission. Most of the travel groups have group reservations, so it is important to make one. Don’t be surprised if you are sitting by someone you don’t know. You go back to the theater, and the second half begins at 7:30.

We returned to the hotel about midnight. It was a wonderful day! #jennskitchenblog #jennstravelblog #germany
